Gambling should cost you entertainment, never your life

Spinzonka writes about betting, so we are also going to be straight with you about the harm it can do. If the fun has stopped, help in South Africa is free, confidential and available right now.

National Responsible Gambling Programme — toll-free, 24 hours. You can also SMS 076 675 0710 for a free call-back, or WhatsApp 076 675 0710.

Warning signs

Be honest with yourself

  • Betting with money set aside for rent, food, school fees or transport
  • Chasing losses with bigger stakes to 'get it back'
  • Borrowing money, or hiding how much you have staked, from people close to you
  • Betting to escape stress, boredom or low mood rather than for entertainment
  • Losing sleep, missing work or pulling back from friends because of gambling
  • Feeling irritable or anxious when you try to cut down

If more than one of these sounds familiar, treat it as a signal rather than a verdict. Talking to a counsellor early is far easier than fixing the damage later.

Practical controls

Tools on your account

Deposit limits

Cap what can enter the account daily, weekly or monthly. Reductions usually take effect immediately; increases have a cooling-off delay by design.

Loss and time limits

Cap what you can lose or how long a session runs. Set these while you are calm, not mid-session.

Time-out

A short break — days or weeks — that locks the account and stops promotional contact.

Self-exclusion

A longer, harder block for when limits are not enough. Ask the operator's support team to action it and keep the confirmation.

House rules

What we will never do

  • We do not market to anyone under 18. Betting under 18 is illegal in South Africa.
  • We do not promise winnings, systems or guaranteed returns. Every outcome is random.
  • We do not suggest gambling as a way to make an income or to solve money problems.
  • We do not run login or payment forms, and we never ask for banking details.
